I think dark looks good in magazine photos and that's about it.FYI.the top loft is irregular plank wood and looks especially beautiful. I didn't realize the dark stain would suck up so much light and the constant layer of 'white haze' was more than I could take. Long story short we refinished them in nutmeg stain and the place instantly looked larger, brighter and warmer.Never ever again. you could not appreciate the grain in the floor and there was little contrast in the furniture, rugs etc. You could see every scratch, scuff, footprint and particle of dust.They read 'brown'. It sucked up all the light that there was and there was always a layer of dust it seemed even not long after cleaning. We have a red oak floor and finished them in a dark wash.almost ebony. We have a loft with north facing light and soaring ceilings. What maple has going for it, is that it has little character and it is a very light flooring, good for contemporary settings. Hickory expands and contracts a lot so be aware. Unstained hickory is not formal in any way it's a very happy floor. If you seal hickory with a water base sealer it looks more contemporary and less rustic IMO. The wide variation and light color of the hickory floor is just what that house needed to make the best of low eight foot ceilings and to brighten up some dark corners in that house. I sort of have a swedish-modern-country thing going on in that house. I have new hickory floors in my lake house. As others have said, there's lots of maintenance with dark floors. I think dark floors look best with tall ceiling heights. My Brazilian cherry floors were installed in an urban townhouse with ten foot ceilings and long tall windows. I find slippers and rugs are required to cushion your feet. Hickory and Brazilian cherry are very hard, dense floors which is good and bad. You have to really consider your decor when using those floors. Brazilian cherry and Hickory are statement floors. It's easy on the eyes and it does not show dirt or scratches too much and it takes a stain well, unlike all of the others I mentioned.

Here's my opinion on each: Red oak seems to meld easily with lots of different decor styles. I loved them all! Each floor matched the style of room/house they were in. I've had natural red oak, natural maple, natural Brazilian cherry and now I have natural hickory.
